Materials
When it comes to property loss prevention, best guesses aren't enough. You need real data to determine exactly how a given material will perform in an actual fire or windstorm.
Whether you are formulating a new material or simply looking for one that complies with a specific building code or insurance need, the FM APPROVED mark is your guarantee that the material in question will perform according to expectations.
At FM Approvals, our engineers use both full and small-scale tests during product evaluations to analyze a given material's ability to limit fire spread and its capacity to withstand the elements of weather (including ultraviolet light), corrosion and foot traffic.
If the material passes our stringent tests, we approve it and include it in our
Approval Guide. If the material fails the test, FM Approvals will work with your company as needed and help you to engineer improved performance.

Of course, your product may not require a full-scale test. FM Approvals has correlated the results of full-scale corner tests conducted during the past 25 years, so corner tests are no longer required for many families of products. We can use small-scale flammability tests in combination with intermediate-scale room tests as the primary evaluation leading to product Approval, thereby saving you time and money.
We also have expanded our wind-performance testing. In 1995, we introduced significantly higher levels of wind performance, coupled with 15 psf incremental listings. This allows designers to select building panels based on recommendations of FM Approvals for a specific location, without having to guess how the panels might perform.
FM Approved FOUPs Limit Risk
FOUPs or Front Opening Unified Pods are specialized plastic containers designed to transport about 25 costly silicon wafers securely and safely through the lengthy semiconductor fabrication process.
Originally produced from highly combustible materials, wafer carrier fires have the potential to cause devastating property damage, business interruption and loss of market share for manufacturers.
After years of research, the first FM4911 Approved FOUP was successfully tested in December of 2008. FOUPs certified by FM Approvals effectively limit fire spread and smoke damage allowing companies to avoid significant financial loss.
FM Approvals tests and certifies FOUPs to Approval Standard 4911 Wafer Carriers for Use in Clean Rooms.
