FM Approvals has adopted an internationally recognized ANSI/ISA testing standard for its update of revised Approval Standard 3610 Intrinsically Safe Apparatus and Associated Apparatus for use in Class I, II & III, Division 1 and Class1, Zone 0 & 1 Hazardous (Classified) Locations. FM Approvals has not developed any unique criteria. The update will affect only those who manufacture, or truly have a need for, an FM Approved intrinsically safe product for hazardous locations.

The new edition of Approval Standard 3610, released in January 2010, adopts ANSI/ISA – 60079-11, 2009, and has an effective date of January 2012. This document provides manufacturers with a high-level overview of changes that may affect currently FM Approved products.

In 2006, FM Approvals notified manufacturers of FM Approved products affected by the pending publication of FM Approval Standard 3610:2007. Recertification to the 2007 edition was required by January 1, 2010. In March 2009, FM Approvals, at the request of industry, extended the recertification date to January 1, 2012.
