Hazardous Location Electrical Equipment
Hazardous location electrical equipment testing is one of FM Approvals' largest product categories.
To help ensure that your electrical equipment won't cause a fire or explosion in an area where flammable or combustible materials (such as gases, vapors, dusts, or fibers) are present, it must be designed using various methods of protection.
Our engineers have a solid background in relevant, permitted protection techniques, national and international standards, and area classification associated with hazardous locations. They can provide technical assistance in the application of any of these protection techniques.
FM Approvals tests numerous types of hazardous location electrical equipment, including:
- ATEX
- Dust-ignition-proof equipment
- Electrical and electronic equipment
- Electrical heat-tracing equipment
- Electrostatic neutralizing equipment
- Electric motors (including mining applications)
- Electrostatic-finishing equipment
- Enclosure type/IP ingress protection
- Explosion-proof (flameproof) equipment
- General utilization
- Increased-safety equipment
- Industrial-control equipment
- Industrial trucks
- Material-level indicators
- Nonincendive high-power equipment
- Paint-spray heaters
- Process-control monitoring devices
- Purged and pressurized equipment
- Special-protection equipment
- Submersible motors
- Supply equipment
- Valve actuators, controllers and positioners
Additional hazardous location electrical equipment tested by FM Approvals include:
- Combustible gas detectors
- Communication equipment
- Control and terminal enclosures
- Flashlights
- Intrinsically safe equipment
- Nonincendive low-power equipment
- Process measurement and control instruments
- Valve controllers and positioners
FM Approvals tests and approves electrical equipment in accordance with Approval Standards and/or American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standards. FM Approvals also has reciprocal testing agreements with labs in Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, and the United Kingdom.
This reciprocal agreement means you don't have to send separate samples to different labs to gain international certification. We conduct the tests in our facilities, and the results serve as the basis for certification with the labs of your choice. This one-stop shopping approach can save you time and money
